A chemical peel is a rejuvenation procedure that removes the old skin on the face, neck, or hands and allows for new, smoother skin to grow in its place. When applied, the chemical solution exfoliates the skin and causes it to peel off. The regenerated skin is less wrinkled and softer.
There are three basic types of chemical peels.
Superficial peel, otherwise known as “the lunchtime peel,” where an alpha-hydroxy acid or other mild acid is used to penetrate the outer layer of skin and exfoliate it gently. Typically, this treatment is used to correct mild skin discoloration, softening rough skin, and refreshing the treated areas.
Medium peel is used to penetrate the outer and middle skin layers and dissolve damaged skin cells. This treatment is typically used to improve age spots, smooth fine lines, and wrinkles, remove freckling and acne scars, improve moderate skin discoloration, as well as smooth rough skin and treat some precancerous skin growths.
Deep peel penetrates the middle layer of skin, removing damaged skin cells, freckles, lines, age spots, hyper pigmentation, sun damage, and shallow scars. Treatment provides dramatic improvement to skin appearance, but due to the nature of the treatment, it can only be performed once.
Despite the term “acid,” the chemical peel treatment is relatively painless. Clients may feel a sting from the skin removal process, but nothing beyond a slight discomfort. The acids applied to the skin are designed with natural and artificial ingredients to make the exfoliating sensation gentle. Of course, the severity of the peel may amplify irritation. At GLO MD Wellness Spa, our providers are there with you throughout the treatment to ensure your comfort.
First, you need to determine what the chemical peel is for. Knowing the specific blemishes you want to reduce and what results you want from the procedure help your GLO MD Wellness Spa technician design a chemical peel plan that's right for you.
It's important to remember that a chemical peel is a process and not an instantaneous skincare miracle cure. The best approach is to begin with a gentle peel and work your way towards regular peeling. Consistency will yield sustained positive results. Under the supervision of our technicians, we'll create the optimal treatment regimen for your individualized skin needs.
